Mile 5 Trip - Rafting
Date and time: Tuesday, September 16, 2:30-5:00 pm, approximately 2 hours including travel time (1 hour spent on the water, 1 hour spent on gearing up and travel).
Capacity: 60 (Group will be divided into smaller groups with guides)
Description: Enjoy the beautiful mountain scenery combined with breathtaking vistas as we paddle 8 km (5 miles) through several mild whitewater rapids. This two hour round trip is a perfect fun introduction to white water rafting.
The Mile 5 trip is our most popular trip, for ages 5 to 95, and the one with the longest season, early May-late September. After suiting up in clean dry wetsuits and a safety talk it is off to the river. The section begins with about a 10-minute float. This allows the paddler time to feel comfortable in the raft, experience the river environment and take in the 360-degree mountain view. After this short float the grade 2 rapids begin. Grade 2 is big enough to get everyone who wants to get wet, wet but it is highly unlikely anyone will go for an unexpected/unwanted swim. If you are brave enough, there are designated swim spots for a dip in glacial waters. After 4 or 5 sections of rapids the Miette River joins the Athabasca, highlighting the colour difference between a rain and snow fed river and a glacier fed river. The trip ends just around the corner at Old Fort Point. After getting out of your wet gear it is a short drive back to town.
Activity Level/Physical Restrictions: No experience necessary. Great for beginners.
